Task Guide: Authoring an Archaeological Monograph Chapter

Alpha status (14 October 2026): XiWrite is planned and its public installer is not verified. This page describes the checked WordCraft foundation; XiKey integration is still in progress. Alpha is free today.

Scenario Overview

In this guide, you will typeset a 30-page academic chapter on Bronze Age Shipwreck Amphora Typologies for a marine archaeology monograph. You will configure multi-level heading styles, insert captioned hull diagrams and math equations, manage footnotes and bibliographic citations, and generate an automatic Table of Contents and Table of Figures.

Step 1: Configure Page Setup and Hierarchical Styles

  1. Create a new document (Ctrl+N) and open the Layout tab.
  2. Set Size to B5 (176 × 250 mm) and configure Mirrored Margins (Inside: 25 mm, Outside: 20 mm, Top/Bottom: 22 mm) for two-sided book binding.
  3. On the Home tab, open the Styles pane:
    • Modify Heading 1 (Chapter Title), Heading 2 (Primary Section), and Heading 3 (Catalog Sub-entry) with consistent spacing before/after and enabling Keep with next to help keep headings together at the bottom of a page.
    • Modify Body Text to use 11 pt serif typography with 1.25 line spacing and first-line indentation.
  4. Enable Multi-level Numbering (1, 1.1, 1.1.1) linked to Heading 1–3.

Step 2: Insert Captioned Hull Diagrams and Cross-References

  1. Place the cursor after the typology introduction and choose Insert › Picture to embed the amphora profile drawing (amphora-type-4b.png).
  2. Set text wrapping to Top and Bottom and center the figure on the column.
  3. With the figure selected, go to References › Insert Caption:
    • Select label Figure, enable chapter numbering (Figure 1.1), and enter : Dressel-precursor amphora rim profile recovered from Trench C-4.
  4. In your body paragraph, place the cursor where you discuss the rim curvature and select References › Cross-reference:
    • Reference type: Figure
    • Insert reference to: Only label and number (Figure 1.1)
    • Enable Insert as hyperlink so readers of the exported PDF can click directly to the plate.

Step 3: Add Equations, Footnotes, and Citations

  1. To document the volumetric capacity estimation formula for the amphora body, click Insert › Equation and enter the frustum integral expression using XiWrite's built-in math editor.
  2. To add an archival excavation note at the bottom of the current page, place the cursor after the trench reference and select References › Insert Footnote. XiWrite automatically numbers the note and allocates space above the page footer.
  3. For radiocarbon lab references that belong at the end of the chapter, select References › Insert Endnote.
  4. Open References › Manage Sources to register bibliographic entries (author, title, year, journal/monograph), then click Insert Citation at each scholarly claim.

Step 4: Build the Table of Contents, Table of Figures, and Bibliography

  1. Insert a section break (Layout › Breaks › Next Page) before the chapter introduction to create a front-matter section with lowercase Roman page numbers (i, ii, iii).
  2. Place the cursor on page i and select References › Table of Contents › Insert Table of Contents (collecting Heading 1–3 with right-aligned page numbers and dot leaders).
  3. Below the TOC, select References › Insert Table of Figures (collecting all Figure captions).
  4. Scroll to the end of the chapter, insert a Heading 2 titled References, and click References › Bibliography › Insert Bibliography to generate the formatted reference list from your cited sources.
  5. Export a standard PDF, then inspect its page breaks, fonts and links. PDF/A output is not available.
