Write for the reader, from the first heading to the final page

A good document helps someone find an answer, follow a process or stay with a story. XiWrite is the XiKey™ word-processing project built around that practical work: create a consistent structure, arrange the information, review changes and prepare a shareable copy.

XiWrite is planned and unreleased in the Alpha stage, and Alpha is free today. The feature set described here was checked in WordCraft source; WordCraft itself is Alpha. XiKey integration and installer availability have not yet been verified. These are capabilities of the foundation, not a promise of a finished XiKey release. Source: checked upstream README. XiKey status and pricing: XiKey status and XiKey pricing, checked 14 October 2026.

Who it is for

Explore the project if you write guides, short reports, letters or editorial submissions and want styles, tables and review in the same workflow. It is particularly interesting if you prefer an editable local document and a PDF for distribution.

For complex Office templates, tightly prescribed pagination or simultaneous team editing, assess the gaps first. DOCX read/write does not guarantee that all details survive a round trip or that the pages break like Word. The upstream records incomplete real-world file validation, pagination differences, no real-time coauthoring and no VBA execution. Sources: file fidelity, layout report, current gaps.

Give the draft a structure

Styles and a live style gallery let you keep headings and body text consistent. Paragraph controls, tabs, lists and spacing establish a readable rhythm. Find/replace and formatting tools help with changes that would otherwise be repeated by hand. Source: writing and formatting feature list.

A long document needs more than text formatting. Tables provide a place for structured details, including repeating header rows. Page and section controls manage margins, columns, orientation and headers/footers. Pictures and text boxes can sit beside an explanation with text wrapping. Source: layout capabilities.

Review, reference and share

Comments and tracked changes let you discuss an edit before accepting it. Tables of contents, notes, captions, citations and bibliographies help readers navigate and locate a source. Mail merge can create personalised documents from supported lists; email merge is not implemented. Save an editable DOCX and export a PDF with selectable text, links and bookmarks, then inspect both before sending them. Sources: review commands, reference and format capabilities, mail merge.

Three documents with a job to do

These are suggested briefs, not shipped templates or verified XiKey sample documents.

  • A neighbourhood legal-aid guide: turn reviewer-approved information into a booklet with clear sections, a table of contents and references. Use comments to resolve wording questions, then produce a PDF for distribution while retaining the editable master.
  • A veterinary clinic discharge leaflet: organise approved instructions into a readable checklist and a simple table for the care schedule. Keep the clinic's illustrations close to the relevant explanation, and review the final page layout before printing or sharing.
  • A literary journal submission: work on a story in paragraph styles, use word count to meet the journal's limit, and track the editor's revisions. Deliver the requested editable file alongside a PDF only when the submission rules allow it.

The underlying writing, layout, review and export capabilities are documented in the checked feature list. The content of each brief remains the author's and reviewers' work.

A workflow that preserves the draft

  1. Start a new document or open a supported file; keep an untouched copy of anything received from someone else.
  2. Set heading and body styles, then organise sections, lists and tables before polishing each paragraph.
  3. Add notes and references, review comments and accept or reject tracked changes.
  4. Save the editable master, export a PDF, and check page breaks, fonts and objects in the result.

For repeated production work, upstream command macros, CLI conversion and MCP can automate edits and inspect document structure. These interfaces are distinct from Microsoft VBA and are not evidence of a shipped XiKey command-line package. Source: CLI and MCP.

What XiKey is bringing to Arabic writing

The Arabic interface and one-click EN ⇄ ع switch are in progress for XiWrite. The shared font dialog is being developed around Arabic style groups and script-aware previews. XiKey splash, About and message dialogs are also in progress.

The office text roadmap includes in-progress kashida justification, tashkeel handling, Western/Arabic-Indic/Eastern numeral styles and Umm al-Qura Hijri/Gregorian dates. These are not shipped XiWrite features, and this page makes no claim of current Arabic spelling or grammar proofing.

Signed updates through XiLauncher are in progress. Classic/Modern layouts, Retina scaling and sandboxed launcher add-ons are planned. The source for these distinctions is XiKey status, checked 14 October 2026.

Join the Alpha with a representative document

Alpha is free. XiWrite belongs to the planned XiOffice bundle with XiSheet and XiSlides; paid pricing begins from Beta under the XiKey store policy. No XiWrite installer or hardware minimum was verified in this review.

Try the documents you actually exchange, compare the imported and exported pages, and keep the originals. Microsoft Word can remain the stronger fit for cloud coauthoring, VBA-based workflows and complex Office fidelity; the comparison explains the trade-offs without claiming full parity. Microsoft coauthoring, Microsoft macro documentation, upstream fidelity limits.

Signed updates through XiLauncher are in progress. Publishing, signing and release integration remain subject to the project release work.

System requirements

  • XiWrite installers and minimum CPU, RAM, GPU and OS versions have not been verified; no ready-to-install XiKey platform is asserted (XiKey status: /products/xiwrite/).
  • WordCraft documents desktop targets on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD plus a browser build. These are upstream targets, not verified XiKey downloads (upstream README.md at the checked commit).
  • Check important imported documents and exported PDFs visually, especially page breaks, fonts, charts, SmartArt and ink; fidelity and real-world corpus validation remain incomplete (upstream docs/file-format-parity.md; docs/layout-parity.md; docs/gaps.md).

Questions, answered

Is XiWrite ready to replace every Word workflow?

No. XiWrite is planned/unreleased in the Alpha stage; the checked WordCraft base is itself Alpha. Complex file fidelity, real-time coauthoring and VBA execution remain gaps. Keep originals and test representative documents (XiKey status: /products/xiwrite/; upstream docs/gaps.md).

Does DOCX support mean identical pages in Word?

No. The source implements DOCX read/write, but its own layout report records different font metrics and pagination and incomplete comparison on real documents. Inspect both the editable document and final PDF (upstream docs/layout-parity.md; docs/file-format-parity.md).

Is Arabic proofing part of the current offering?

Arabic spelling and grammar are not verified. XiKey Arabic UI, font groups, kashida, tashkeel handling, numeral styles and Hijri dates are in progress, not shipped XiWrite features (upstream docs/localization-parity.md; XiKey status: /products/xiwrite/).

What does Alpha cost?

Alpha is free today. XiWrite belongs to the planned XiOffice bundle with XiSheet and XiSlides; paid pricing starts from Beta under the store policy (XiKey pricing: /store/).
