XiMotion

A moving image can explain a process, give a product a presence, or make a few words stay with the viewer. XiMotion is the XiKey™ project for that kind of work: motion graphics and compositing built on EffectCraft. The foundation combines compositions, layers, animated properties and effects in a workflow that develops a scene over time. Inspected upstream overview

Who will find it interesting

Motion designers exploring an open foundation, educators creating visual explanations, and small creative teams developing titles or short animated pieces have useful places to start. The strongest early brief is a compact original scene with a clear destination and time to evaluate the result. If your production depends on existing After Effects projects or its plug-ins, the migration limits below matter before you begin.

Build the scene, then shape the motion

A scene you can keep changing. Combine text, shapes, footage and nested compositions. Parenting connects related layers, while track mattes and drawn masks control what becomes visible. A rhythm you can adjust. Linear, Bezier and hold keyframes define the motion; Easy Ease and value or speed graphs refine its pace. Time remapping, stretch, reverse and freeze controls give footage a different role in the scene. A look with depth. Stack implemented color, blur, distortion, keying and generation effects. Layer styles supply shadows, glows, strokes and bevels; 3D layers, cameras and lights create spatial relationships. Marine conservation: make a habitat connection visible

For a coastal conservation team's short explainer, separate a reef diagram, species illustrations and explanatory labels into layers. Reveal an illustrated migration route with trim paths, then use restrained text animation to introduce the relationship. The creative challenge is clarity: every movement should help the viewer follow the idea. This brief uses the layer, shape and type tools described above.

Railway training: make the sequence easy to follow

Start with a railway operator's supplied safety illustrations and approved training script. Build each step in a reusable composition, hold key positions long enough to read, and use markers and timed reveals to organize the explanation. Watchmaking: give a small detail a large presence

A watchmaker's product reveal can begin with macro photographs rather than a complete 3D model. Layer the dial, hands and typography, move the camera through their staged depth, and ease the final title into place. Compare a few short renders to find the pace that suits the object. A practical first workflow

1. Choose the delivery format and create a short composition with the frame rate and size you need.
2. Import source images or footage, organize the layers, and keep recurring groups in nested compositions.
3. Block the movement with a small number of keyframes; refine curves and reveals only after the scene reads clearly.
4. Preview a representative section with its effects and sound, then render that section before committing to a longer piece.
5. Use the render queue for H.264 MP4, ProRes MOV, WebM, image sequences or audio output. For suitable web or app animation, inspect Lottie export warnings: cameras, most effects, audio and other unsupported content will not carry across. Import workflow, render output, Lottie limits

What XiKey is adding

In progress for XiMotion: an Arabic interface with one-click EN ⇄ ع switching; an Arabic font dialog grouped by style; XiKey splash, About and message dialogs; and signed updates through XiLauncher. XiPhoto is the verified language-switch pilot, so its success is not evidence that XiMotion has shipped the same integration.

Planned: Classic and Modern layouts, Retina scaling, and sandboxed add-on installation and management through XiLauncher. The Arabic kashida, tashkeel, digit and Hijri tools are scoped to image, layout and office applications; this page does not promise them for motion work. These statuses follow XiKey status, checked 14 October 2026.

Alpha with a clear boundary

The checked upstream cannot open .aep or .aepx projects, and After Effects SDK plug-ins do not run in it. Native projects use .ecproj JSON or .ecprojx XML. Upstream documents interaction bugs, crashes and visual fidelity that has not been broadly measured against After Effects. Source review: EffectCraft workspace version 0.9.2, main commit 549e9d825132986d6167c1432cd3328efcbb0278, checked 2026-10-14. The latest release notes reviewed were v0.9.2, published 12 October 2026 at 470ea7a3af82ee1dd1d2f86c777fe6891bd0c37b; the inspected main revision is later and distinct. This was a source and documentation review, not a XiKey runtime test.
